The science of a solid cover song is complicated. Sometimes songs that should never be taken out of their heavy electric realm find their way to a banjo, and sometimes songs that are acoustic find themselves blasting through distortions peddles up the wazoo. So many covers often feel like disasters, but sometimes those methods actually work out.
I’m exceptionally picky when it comes to cover songs, almost to a fault. If you’re going to tackle one of the greats, you’ve got balls, but that doesn’t always mean you’ve got the talent. Even harder to pull off is a mash-up cover of two classic songs.
Despite these odds, The Crocodiles manage to successfully integrate the peppy vibes of The Beach Boys’ “California Girls,” with the funk of Deee-Lite’s “Groove is in the Heart,” in an eerily perfect way. Ever since I first stumbled upon this cover, I have had it on loop, regretting nothing; it’s been longer than I can remember since I found a cover as awesome as this one. The opening riff is so infectious, the vocals so haunting, yet I still want to hula-hoop around my room like it’s 1990.
Listen and enjoy the sweet Southern California sounds; this is my favourite cover of the week, what’s yours?
