If you share my love of choral music, there’s a show this weekend that you should try to go see. The Cantabile Chamber Chorale is performing Saturday, December 1st at Christ United Methodist Church at 485 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ. Tickets are 12 dollars in advanced for students and 15 dollars at the door. To get tickets and details, call 732-560-7132 or go to their website.

In high school, I remember certain days when all the students had to go down to the auditorium in order to watch the school’s musical groups play. There was the orchestra with string instruments: I dug their performance for sure but wouldn’t have gone out of my way to see it. Then there was the band with woodwind and brass instruments: it tortured me for what seemed like an eternity with its continuous slog of unpleasant sounds. And finally there was the chorus: divine, angelic, heavenly, sweet sweet nectar, a feast for the ears. There’s something so moving about choral music.

◊This particular show from Cantabile is called ENCORE: Songs for a Silver Jubilee. There are going to be 14 songs performed, including three Cantabile originals. The group is even accompanied by live instruments; and they’re Rutgers students! Choral music always seems perfect for this time of year. There’s something romantic about human voices against the snow and cold.♦
