Artist Statement: Suburban Mornings
I believe there is a direct relationship between a person’s environment and mental functioning. Being able to mentally exist in a somewhat acceptable way requires a certain social landscape. While some may believe these are meaningless constructs, I have a firm attachment to the idea that people must be compatible with their surroundings. For those like myself who find it difficult to coexist in neither cities nor rurals, there is suburbia: an environment that reconciles noise and silence, maintaining an adequate balance between social interaction and solitude. This work represents a time and place in which I feel most comfortable and content. Suburban mornings being the concentration in the content of these images, I wanted to convey my appreciation for them. Being humble in nature, they provide breathing room in the form of an interval. Using morning sunlight, the photographs in this series consist of still lives, exterior scenery, and portraits.
